Dental Crowns Q&A

I’ve damaged my molars. Can dental crowns help?

Yes. Dental crowns are synthetic caps made of ceramic or ceramic zirconia bonded on top of a damaged, decaying, or eroded tooth. Crowns are particularly effective at repairing molars –– the teeth at the back of your mouth.

Dr. Mahadkar also offers dental bridges –– fixed restorations that fill a gap where a permanent tooth used to be.

When are dental crowns and bridges necessary?

At The Brooklyn Dental Center, Dr. Mahadkar uses dental crowns to:

  • Restore dental implants
  • Cover stained and severely discolored teeth
  • Complete root canal therapy
  • Repair broken and worn-down teeth
  • Protect and support damaged teeth
  • Strengthen weak teeth

You might benefit from a dental bridge if you’ve lost a single tooth to extractions, trauma, or gum disease.

What’s the process for getting dental crowns and bridges?

At The Brooklyn Dental Center, getting dental crowns and bridges takes two visits.

Getting a crown

Dr. Mahadkar completes an oral exam and takes digital X-rays to assess the damage or decay. She numbs your mouth with an anesthetic and removes the compromised portion of your tooth enamel.

Dr. Mahadkar takes impressions of your tooth and sends them to a dental lab. The lab uses your impressions to design a custom dental crown that restores your tooth’s shape and size.

You return to The Brooklyn Dental Center when your custom crown is finished. Dr. Mahadkar bonds it on top of your tooth and checks your bite.

Getting a bridge

Dr. Mahadkar completes an oral exam and takes oral X-rays. She administers a local anesthetic and removes a thin layer of enamel from the two abutment teeth on either side of the gap in your smile.

Dr. Mahadkar takes impressions of your teeth and sends them to a dental lab. The lab designs a custom dental bridge –– a fixed appliance with a false (artificial) tooth and two crowns.

You return to The Brooklyn Dental Center when your bridge is ready. Dr. Mahadkar bonds the bridge in place and explains how to care for it.

How long do dental crowns and bridges last?

Dental crowns and bridges average 12-15 years, but they often last longer with good oral hygiene. Dr. Mahadkar recommends brushing your teeth twice daily, flossing regularly, and never chewing on hard objects, like ice cubes and candy.
